In modern times, the gods have abandoned conscious form and merged into the world itself. Save for the Fates, whom require their ability to think to fairly carry out their duties. Thus, they created the Incarnations; human successors through whom they can channel to maintain conscious thought.

Clotho leaves her Incarnation mute; she cannot yell with the joy of life that she governs. For Lachesis, she is blind; unable to see the unfolding life that she dictates. Atropos is mercifully deaf; the screams of the agony of death do not reach her ears.

When an Incarnation dies, another predetermined human takes up the mantle. This is Zachary Finch. He is Lachesis, and his cousins brothers, Clotho (Abe) and Atropos (Markham). In exchange for his sight, he can see the unwound thread of someone's life - their past - simply by twirling his fingers around a belonging of theirs. Seeing their future isn't quite as easy.
