life could be simple, but you never fail

Hello, kids! Today I would like to talk to you about a very serious subject that affects considerable small underrepresented amounts of our population. What is this problem, you may ask?

Vampirism.

Don't laugh! Whether you may be thinking of cheesy monster flicks or the true terrors that lurk in the night, there remains a number of vampires who would rather hide in plain sight and keep their problem from society. Take Zachary Finch for example. He is one of the rare breeds of vampires that may walk in sunlight without any ill effects, which allows him to blend in. At the same time, his sleep patterns have been skewed to the more nocturnal. Let me tell you, that's not always a blessing in Bete Noire.

Along with that particular gift, Zachary possesses several other new abilities! His enhanced strength allows him to keep the upper hand against his prey, while heightened olfactory senses (that means his sense of smell!) is essential for picking out different people amongst a crowd. Depending on the amount of blood in his system, he also heals much faster from injury than a human would, and cannot die aside from one or two very specific methods.

Keep in mind, kids, that with all of these marvels come the downsides. Among the largest is that although he can still eat regular foods (except for, of course, garlic), they no longer provide him with any nutritional benefit or, really, do anything for his hunger at all. Speaking of hunger! The reason he survives off of blood is simply because his body can no longer produce it naturally; this is a biiig problem if he gets hurt too badly. As a self-defense mechanism against his remaining humanity and any potential aversion to blood, his body has begun to crave it whenever he goes without for more than a few days. In addition, he can no longer face holy objects or step on holy ground, and be it a stake or only a splinter, wood embedded in the skin hurts. So be careful not to accidentally impale him or cut off his head, all right? Nothing silly like that. One last affect is how his reflection has completely disappeared from notice, be it on glass or water - not that this would personally affect the poor man.

Now before you go out and try identifying vampires like Zachary on your own, class, I want you to remember two things: their fangs may barely be any bigger than our own canines, but they're certainly much sharper; and that if you end up being fed on by one, don't worry! Their fangs possess a special magic that will numb your body for the duration. Isn't that nice of them? Oh, but you should worry if they drink too much. If they ingest a certain amount of your blood, then once you're no longer passed out from the blood loss, you'll be a vampire yourself!
